How Schools Can Publish Their Own Textbooks and Workbooks

A step-by-step guide for schools, coaching institutes and teachers who want to design and print their own textbooks, workbooks and study material.

In short

To publish your own textbook or workbook: plan the structure, set up master pages for headers and page numbers, write chapters together with colleagues, add equations, activities and images, then export a print-ready PDF for your printer. A browser-based publishing tool lets teachers do this without professional design software.

More schools and coaching institutes are creating their own learning material: practice workbooks aligned to their teaching plan, revision books for board exams, or activity books for the primary classes. Doing this in a word processor works for a few pages, but a 120-page workbook quickly becomes hard to manage.

Why create your own material?

  • It matches what you teach. Exercises follow your sequence and your examples.
  • It is consistent. Every class gets the same quality of material.
  • It builds your brand. Material with your institution's name travels home with every student.
  • It can be updated every year. You are not waiting for the next edition of someone else's book.

Step 1: Plan the book

Before opening any tool, decide the page size, the number of chapters, and the parts each chapter will contain (introduction, worked examples, exercises, answers). A one-page plan saves days of rework.

Step 2: Set up master pages

Master pages hold the elements that repeat on every page: the header with the book title, the footer, page numbers and background. Design them once and every page that uses the master updates automatically. For printed books, use facing pages with mirrored margins so the inner gutter leaves room for binding.

Step 3: Write and design together

Textbooks are rarely written by one person. Invite subject teachers as editors and reviewers as viewers, so everyone works on the same book instead of emailing files back and forth. Autosave means nobody loses a chapter to a closed tab.

Step 4: Add equations, activities and images

  • Use a visual equation editor for maths and science instead of pasting images.
  • Use activity blocks for MCQs, fill-in-the-blanks and matching exercises so every exercise looks the same.
  • Use tables for data, timetables and answer keys.
  • Upload and crop images, and add shapes and arrows for diagrams.

Step 5: Check, export and print

Preview every page, then export a print-ready PDF. Ask your printer whether they prefer a vector PDF (selectable text) or an exact-appearance export. Print a single proof copy before ordering the full run.
